...it's about making whoopie, you know, coitus, copulation, mating, nookie, hooking up, getting it on, getting busy, going all the way, hitting a home run, humping, making bacon, making babies, fooling around, ravishing, scoring, screwing, banging, boning, dicking and engaging in marital congress.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Basically, it's about making the beast with two backs.</div>

So, to absolutely no ones surprise, the latest victim of Disney's ongoing campaign to bravely reinvent their animated "Disney Princess" canon by ruining it with sub-par live action adaptations is Mulan. The first of Disney's attempt to pay lip service to "other cultures" Mulan was a pretty strong animated movie about a young woman finding her place in the world in the most American way possible...</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
In this version Mulan is ALREADY a Kung Fu knowing, sword fighting badass BEFORE she rides out in her Dad's armour, to the point where she get's made a General after only a few battles, because she is just that good at stabbing things. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are still similarities with the Disney movie, the quirky posse of soldiers are still around, and are still hilarious, but I wouldn't get too emotionally attached to them (this is a war movie after all)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Still more period accurate than Eddie Murphy<br />
<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Despite this anachronism the film actually sticks pretty closely to the original legend. Rather than turning a long-dead race of people into a cross between Fu Manchu and Sauron's Orcs. Rise Of A Warrior opts for a more historically accurate, and even handed portrayal of the Rouran, giving the movie a more politically aware and textured subtext of intrigue. This is great, as it adds a whole new layer to the stabbings.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There's a host of other things I like, the fact that all the military higher ups pretty much know Mulan is a woman, but don't make an issue out of it due to a combination of respect and fear of her stabbing prowess. The fact that in many ways the real villains of the movie are her own countries government. Seriously, if you thought this guy... </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All in all it's a great, entertaining take on the legend that I strongly recommend (I wouldn't be writing this article if I didn't.) it's a deeper, darker look at one of the most badass female character's of legend and well worth a look for fans of the Disney film that want something a bit more true to life.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJtckLBsdl5qS1ZYoJJSXFsVLcvWuCgt0zb9zuAZVfS4vXULyw3LU6XHhW_rw9oy-T9OEuKqs4rNxTvg8LpSd_n1lJ6q5XPgJfFstOn8qAeFbgBhYKKJmVJsBfcfO-cWfPIH6amLB-mif_/s1600/Avengers_live_banner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJtckLBsdl5qS1ZYoJJSXFsVLcvWuCgt0zb9zuAZVfS4vXULyw3LU6XHhW_rw9oy-T9OEuKqs4rNxTvg8LpSd_n1lJ6q5XPgJfFstOn8qAeFbgBhYKKJmVJsBfcfO-cWfPIH6amLB-mif_/s1600/Avengers_live_banner.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Don't be scared, underneath that gold faceplate is yet another white guy. DIVERSITY!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
...While DC are struggling to play catch-up in a game that they can't possibly hope to win. Marvel's movie starring a Raccoon and a Tree is a worldwide smash, while DC struggles to get a Wonder Woman movie off the ground.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">According to WB/DC THIS is too much for mainstream audience, but they will be fine with Jesse Eisenberg as an intimidating villain</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
As true as that may appear, and as hackneyed as those observations are. Under closer inspection it quickly becomes apparent that DC could potentially be holding one hell of an ace up their sleeve.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
*Spoilers for those who haven't seen the CW's <i>The Flash </i>but quite frankly, if you aren't watching it already you have only yourself to blame*</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, watching the pilot episode of <i>The Flash, </i>so far, so good. It had bright colours, silver age references & cool special effects, but then the post credits scene happened, with it came a reveal that could potentially be telegraphing the future of the DC Cinematic Universe:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIGecvcMpA7iJlHS8XiyTucfRFr6Co5BdCk1BRY6qrRPkLxktx8pYX6UkKayKWYQrzy9-eqhVUtzNWxXByIYe_8cOJD1ap16r9hmdFlaFw1Pe4pw9XQ0ZvAa04BQqm7Mwj2MxqTEopR6xL/s1600/Screen-Shot-2014-10-07-at-11.07.42-PM-540x350.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIGecvcMpA7iJlHS8XiyTucfRFr6Co5BdCk1BRY6qrRPkLxktx8pYX6UkKayKWYQrzy9-eqhVUtzNWxXByIYe_8cOJD1ap16r9hmdFlaFw1Pe4pw9XQ0ZvAa04BQqm7Mwj2MxqTEopR6xL/s1600/Screen-Shot-2014-10-07-at-11.07.42-PM-540x350.png" height="207" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Of course, I'm referring to The Flash finally getting the white and yellow logo on his costume in 2024</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
What I'm <i>actually </i>referring to are three easter eggs that, while fun little in-jokes on their own, come together to suggest something potentially much bigger.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let's start with the most significant:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The main Headline suggest's that there will be a "Crisis" in which the Flash disappears sometime in the future, when we combine that information with the reference on the bottom right to "Red Skies" it quickly becomes apparent that they are making super-subtle references to <i>Crisis on Infinite Earths</i></div>
<div>
The first Crisis Crossover in comics history and one of (if not <i>the</i>) biggest, most expansive stories in all of fiction (second only to that time <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=326_qvllkn8"><i>Martial Law </i>crossed over with <i>Walker, Texas Ranger</i></a>)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In a nutshell, every DC hero from every Parallel Universe teams up to punch this guy in the dick:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgFbnIe8peYkaA77GPzS2uvShQv7YrDeENh9JcBm6YkLbgj-1qyIxjgOBgtyhLq5QvS4LOs6WHnknpVXANbN1KXxr5AZWJB4395D3qBmoXPjuj5GMXtcJBS1YOEZ7Zbq9wLwRxH6WOgn9N/s1600/2833751-coie_anti_monitor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgFbnIe8peYkaA77GPzS2uvShQv7YrDeENh9JcBm6YkLbgj-1qyIxjgOBgtyhLq5QvS4LOs6WHnknpVXANbN1KXxr5AZWJB4395D3qBmoXPjuj5GMXtcJBS1YOEZ7Zbq9wLwRxH6WOgn9N/s1600/2833751-coie_anti_monitor.jpg" height="316" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">To be fair, he's kind of a jerk</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Multi-dimensional penis punching aside, the most notable thing that happens in this MASSIVE story is that the DC Multiverse is reshuffled into a singular, concise narrative (until they decided to bring the multiverse back and basically undo what made this story so great) </div>
<div>
<br />
Also Barry Allen's Flash DOES disappear, if by "disappear" you mean "get's rapid-aged into dust in one of the most horrific death scenes in comic history"<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVh2qc3SKe7NmLmZrjqTrPWlj_dus2r0hoSJvClW_aSXJ5FTkaVhN5LJWF5j_63cmOgTLj6u1jYdCDCQ75E2enbPGvN7DveF2Lgvv6izWt82TthlHUdXraLKylgR1_3Ch8tdeMGCdesmuk/s1600/flash-death.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVh2qc3SKe7NmLmZrjqTrPWlj_dus2r0hoSJvClW_aSXJ5FTkaVhN5LJWF5j_63cmOgTLj6u1jYdCDCQ75E2enbPGvN7DveF2Lgvv6izWt82TthlHUdXraLKylgR1_3Ch8tdeMGCdesmuk/s1600/flash-death.jpg" height="260" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Let's be real, we already know that Marvel has plans for Movies stretching into 2028, and that their use of <i>The Infinity Gauntlet </i>storyline as a myth arc basically precludes DC from matching them on a mono-universal level. So, how does DC have a ghost of a chance of topping that? By going multi-universal of course!<br />
<br />
Think about it, What better way to beat out Avenger's 3/4's "Avengers/Defenders/Guardians of the Galaxy fight Darkseid's more interesting clone"crossover than having multiple iterations of the Justice League taking on a trans-dimensional god-monster? Just imagine the potential! You could have BatBale making Arrow feel like a chump by pointing out that he was Ra's Al Ghul's first choice, Three different versions of Lex Luthor holding back tears as they walk past a barbershop and Tom Welling and Brandon Routh's Supermen having a contest to see who can look the most bored while lifting a massive piece of CGI mountain...<br />
<br />
<br />
...on second thought this is a terrible idea.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I love me some bluesy rock, and Santiago Kings do NOT fail to deliver. Their sound is gritty, tight and they are lyrically interesting (a refreshing change for this genre) well worth checking out for fans of heavy, grooving, witty rock music. These guys are definitely more fun than most of the bands that I cover, and I recommend them wholeheartedly</div>

OKAY! Time to be really innovative and bitch about some superhero costumes!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
DC is rebooting their comics universe for the 100th time, so let's take a look at their new Justice League costumes and make snarky comments!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>SUPERMAN</b></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This isn't the first time they have attempted to make Superman "Darker and Edgier" and like those other times it likely won't stick. I like the old school black background on the Symbol, but the Jeans, T-Shirt, Blood stained boots and haircut make him look more like that one guy at the bar who challenges everyone he see's to fistfights than a symbol of hope for a troubled world. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
More darker and edgier shenanigans here, this looks like something out of the mid 90's and while it is a departure in many ways it also looks super generic. It looks more like tv's Arrow has gotten ahold of the infinity gauntlet than Green Lantern</div>

I like this one, the darker accents help accentuate the red and there is just enough gold lighting stripes to make the costume more detailed without looking overdrawn, I'm hoping the "mean and moody" vibe he's giving off is just for this picture though, Barry is supposed to be the light hearted one in the team.</div>

Okay, this is the only one that I would call an "improvement" on the original as it looks functional, badass and still retains the spirit of the character, by far the best costume we've seen so far. Not sure about the wrist blades though.</div>

I understand the appeal of putting Batman in power armour, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice everything that makes him Batman to do so!</div>

This is not a list of what I consider the *Best* Horror movies, but my personal favourites.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5: Friday the 13th Part 6</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxeoiDqzOg1ex9Qp1J4ah7_JdNetuvVk9Y7KiWb1o7LdEIrIxiXM2yfp_TkeykT4IZURn2PgDhUpJ432c2vMUGFAhlkmUrZ0sTiuA8oYZSPv7PhqgprW-_zhhvTMggtSaWMyWDpnXaNC9k/s1600/jasonlives5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxeoiDqzOg1ex9Qp1J4ah7_JdNetuvVk9Y7KiWb1o7LdEIrIxiXM2yfp_TkeykT4IZURn2PgDhUpJ432c2vMUGFAhlkmUrZ0sTiuA8oYZSPv7PhqgprW-_zhhvTMggtSaWMyWDpnXaNC9k/s1600/jasonlives5.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Well, looks like he's been disarmed</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Friday the 13th series is a staple of the genre, but this is the only one I think could be considered a "good" movie. It's the first one that really embraced the inherent silliness of the premise, and while it follows on from the previous films, it's also the most accessible for first time viewers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Best Scene: it's a toss up between the James Bond homage in the intro, and the brilliantly ridiculous paintball scene.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4: Se7en</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTjjA_OBFDPDiELCs3xeWspNGeJmmjx50248vNaCkKrT682eSL7zwt3Js-OfsMaUehABXpgbIYuyurFhwG9IsR-y3DOzTQZ1KJ1vwEpXXl_sv58Xh-ttwRPX8Ee4R2ESQajbKgCmVERSaC/s1600/Sloth20b_zps9ae8e024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTjjA_OBFDPDiELCs3xeWspNGeJmmjx50248vNaCkKrT682eSL7zwt3Js-OfsMaUehABXpgbIYuyurFhwG9IsR-y3DOzTQZ1KJ1vwEpXXl_sv58Xh-ttwRPX8Ee4R2ESQajbKgCmVERSaC/s1600/Sloth20b_zps9ae8e024.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hey, you guys</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Okay, so this one arguably doesn't count as horror but it's such a nasty, creepy film that I feel it deserves a place on my list. What I love about this film is the attention to detail. Every scene serves to build the world around the characters, and though you never actually see the murders played out, the aftermath makes them that much more terrfiying</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Best Scene: Sloth *shudders*</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN-2sUPwRDBq6p42Ru0QTghmtVQpd_bO3op_WG6C2yTqOGVXLgResUpF5vArff3MaXtkBXxglpNJI1ykOKXRL1P8B1BQX4eugP7_Oj4CdQTYLYLBdRwgAYTWo72oweD4F19fD8Cn07kK0S/s1600/dagon8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN-2sUPwRDBq6p42Ru0QTghmtVQpd_bO3op_WG6C2yTqOGVXLgResUpF5vArff3MaXtkBXxglpNJI1ykOKXRL1P8B1BQX4eugP7_Oj4CdQTYLYLBdRwgAYTWo72oweD4F19fD8Cn07kK0S/s1600/dagon8.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">She's got legs to die for (kinda)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3: Dagon</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Love me some Lovecraft, and this is arguably the best screen adaptation of his work (although my no.1 and 2 picks were arguably inspired by him as well) dripping with a sense of dread and wrongness that's hard to communicate on screen, while some details are changed this film captures the <i>mood </i>of Lovecrafts work better than almost any other film.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Best Scene: The whole third act, because it goes from escalating into a hollywood style heroic rescue to a brutal finale, reminding us that this is Lovecraft, there are no happy endings</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKX0nBVCDsg33tQbuvbfAE2eQda991Ra6qrLOEuH6FgbIbJLBr50s7zi4_E32Dx2BXtk33E1HP4CDaAm4aaJe1nOrHkGFRRvKe7WH01gUrATxkFFkqZfMc_vTARJG9l7IZPACWlcJzU__l/s1600/large-the-thing-blu-rayx2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKX0nBVCDsg33tQbuvbfAE2eQda991Ra6qrLOEuH6FgbIbJLBr50s7zi4_E32Dx2BXtk33E1HP4CDaAm4aaJe1nOrHkGFRRvKe7WH01gUrATxkFFkqZfMc_vTARJG9l7IZPACWlcJzU__l/s1600/large-the-thing-blu-rayx2.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The years have not been kind to Mickey Rourke</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2: The Thing (remake)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's rather telling that both of my favourite horror films are loose adaptations of The Mountains of Madness, but there you go, I guess I'm a sucker for Cosmic Horror. John Carpenters remake of The Thing From Another World is one of the rare remakes that surpasses the original in almost every regard, incredible practical effects, haunting performances and a great ambiguous ending.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Best Scene: The surgery scene, five minutes of unadulterated savagery.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPVno69wvpPpGbcvYI2vu30SYZ4C5LWJpvlOJzVXf4zGJ83vYKCcpMtY6JIJIB8BXhT7ehfwKHz1JmyknySQdbleqMYV4_G0kO4SSoOyvo8cGXihS6oLrBpoGUbKbjTLJStGANVGbIkMGg/s1600/DSCF0346.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPVno69wvpPpGbcvYI2vu30SYZ4C5LWJpvlOJzVXf4zGJ83vYKCcpMtY6JIJIB8BXhT7ehfwKHz1JmyknySQdbleqMYV4_G0kO4SSoOyvo8cGXihS6oLrBpoGUbKbjTLJStGANVGbIkMGg/s1600/DSCF0346.JPG" height="320" width="212" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is why I'm not into drunken one night stands</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1: Alien</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
MORE Mountains of Madness imagery here, but I love how much this movie still holds up from a design standpoint. The look of the Xenomorph is terrifying, even to this day it's an effective design. Everything about this movie is basically perfect, every character has just enough development for you to care about them, the dialogue is strong and comes from a real place, the aesthetic is a great take on the "used future" style and the acting is top rate.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Best Scene: The revelation of Weyland Yutani's agenda. When it comes right down to it, humans are the real monsters.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I commend the band for this, as it’s very difficult to handle this kind of approach without coming off as either emotionally shallow or hopelessly lost, but the bands musical skill and to simpler days of skate parks, poorly rolled joints and the golden age of the hair straightener, and I thank Standing like Statues for the nostalgia trip. dynamic delivery override any stumbling blocks their genre presents.</div>

There are some phrases you never expect to hear in your life: "Abu Hamza's speech about Women's rights was surprisingly progressive" is one "Jar Jar Binks is a textured and enlightened portrayal of the plight of the modern West Indian" would be another</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
"Nickelback have gone Disco" is a bridge too far.</div>

I'm already what could charitably be described as "not a fan" so I was hardly thrilled with the news when it first hit my ears but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, if only because Chad Kroeger's attempt to channel Adam Levine: </div>

Is adorably inept, in the same way as watching a dog try to fly a plane.</div>

After 40 seconds, and a quick cry in the shower, all I can say is...</div>

<div>
...I don't care</div>

<div>
I've already forgotten this song, like every other Nickelback song. Much like a boring meal consumed 3 months ago it has slipped over the waterfall of my conscious mind and into the chasm of oblivion...</div>

<br />
Electric Spivs, or the acceptable face of sonic crime as they call themselves, are a funky, spunky, chunky punk mix with a kick like Captain America...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/cI9Liw0VOeg/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cI9Liw0VOeg?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
Like a terrified newborn flying at your face Electric Spivs hit hard and loud, but unlike a terrified newborn flying at your face they don't shit all over themselves after the initial impact. Their work is constantly engaging and entertaining, something rare in the loose genre that they inhabit.<br />

<br />
I have to say, with my blend of Hard Rock, Hip Hop and sick humour (see: my song about <a href="https://soundcloud.com/wry-lion/cannibal">eating people</a>) I felt a little bit apprehensive about how well I would fit in amongst these bands.<br />
<br />
The event was organised by Sas Stewart, of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SASCOePromotions?fref=ts">SAS&COe promotions</a>. She did a marvellous job of putting the night on and making all of the artists and punters feel like they were part of something bigger. She employed the Amanda Palmer-tested method of employing taking collections from the punters to pay the bands, a practice which I thoroughly endorse.<br />
<br />
I have have to give special mention to Pete, one of the coolest sound men I've worked with, who went back to his home to retrieve an essential cable to interface my backing band with the Venues crazy cool mixing desk, an act which totally saved my bacon.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pretty awesome mural too!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
All in all it was a killer night, I thoroughly recommend SAS&COe to any band who wants a great gig in North London. The bands were great and made up entirely of cool people (very rare these days) and the collection money was an unexpected, but welcome bonus<br />

I'm always on the lookout for something fresh and different, but also familiar, like a mars bar dipped in tabasco sauce. Todays spicy, chocolatey, caramelly experience is brought to you by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lightrunnerband">Lightrunner</a>,<br />

I spend a lot of time despairing at popular music for the... lets say "troubling" way Women's bodies are represented. It seems that the common counter to the male gaze within pop music is more objectification, but in an artificially empowered context.<br />

In conclusion, while the song does have it's flaws (it certainly could have used another draft of the lyrics) it's fun & catchy, and it's good that there is a voice for Women's issues, even if it's the voice of a grown woman who calls her ass her "Boom Boom" </div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">For those who don't know, Civil War is widely regarded as Marvels greatest comic crossover story, featuring an idealogical (and physical, because Superheroes) conflict between Iron Man and Captain America over a government act that will force Superheroes to register as government employees. Cap is anti-reg, leading a group of heroes as a resistance movement against Stark's gov funded pro-reg faction. Having Tony Stark as a well intentioned antagonist will likely split the fanbase, but from a storytelling perspective it's a great escalation of the Marvel Universe's themes of sacrificing freedom for security and points to the second Avengers movie showing a much darker side of Tony Stark.</span></span></span><br />

<br />
David Bowie has a new song out... and I don't know what to think about it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/dsryGBHiAIg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
It's very interesting... Blending a Jazz Fusion arrangement with Bowies distinctive vocal style for some pretty left-field melodic interplay, The main instrumental figure is pretty compelling, and the 7 minute runtime seemingly functions as a middle finger to homogenised modern pop sensibilities.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pictured on the right: Modern Pop Sensibilities</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Saying that, the whole thing seems a bit forced.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjazl0MI4CTUig-kV62nFH8IHt44PZJz0VGuJrWcwSkl0kNEBfFNalQXYBdQr7GgSXIPoKyXL8FMSh1fPu1-GrCsAt9T7W9RcFyQCa3AY0vcxgZYqfrtFOVFtrJqVFrX2T74kCqs4kJeMfk/s1600/BowieBulge2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjazl0MI4CTUig-kV62nFH8IHt44PZJz0VGuJrWcwSkl0kNEBfFNalQXYBdQr7GgSXIPoKyXL8FMSh1fPu1-GrCsAt9T7W9RcFyQCa3AY0vcxgZYqfrtFOVFtrJqVFrX2T74kCqs4kJeMfk/s1600/BowieBulge2.jpg" height="320" width="315" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Did someone say "forced?"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
From the intentionally cumbersome title, to the use of a genre that commercially peaked in the late 70's it all reeks of "Look how different I am" and although Bowie appears to be putting a lot of effort into distinguishing himself from his contemporaries ultimately it all comes out as quite derivative of two (admittedly distinctive) artists: Scott Walker and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.<br />
<br />
<br />
So, is this where we've ended up? has Pop's great chameleon been reduced to copying his less successful former peers? or is it a scintillating new sound, guaranteed to put all these young pretenders in their place?<br />
<br />
History will be the judge of this.Wry Lionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00914617817501785130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529167327644326408.post-81523797734073132292014-10-09T08:50:00.002+01:002014-10-09T08:50:50.250+01:00Music Spotlight: Sidefields<br />

<br />
Well, I'm back again!<br />
<br />
This week I'm looking at a very intriguing band that goes by the name of Sidefields, their sound is kinda hard to pin down, I suppose the easiest comparison is a cross between a cleaner, slicker My Bloody Valentine & The Cure. Their new album "The Night" is out soon and a great combination of shoegaze and indie vibes, with a wonderfully eccentric lyrical flourish. Check out the song "The Night Is Ours" below.<br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">So, I hadn't really listened to much by these guys from Canada before. My band's drummer kept banging on about them for some time, and they're not exactly without their punk rock credentials. So when we were coming back from playing a show in Lincolnshire a few weeks ago, we put it on to keep us awake.
I ended up borrowing the album because it is just that good. It starts off with a few jazz chords, really bringing you in, and then BANG! not any louder, but with the ferocity of a wounded rhino with an adrenaline shot to the arse. The first three songs take up nearly a dozen minutes of your life but by hell, youíll never want them back.
With lyrics about the state of the punk rock scene, social inequality and global poverty, Propagandhi arenít singing about anything new, but they do it with fresh eyes.
FFO Unpretentious math-core, skate-punk, Fat Wreck Chords. </span><br />
